No turbilhão das cruzadas e da espada,
Onde o metal fez o mundo chorar,
Veio João na veste mais sagrada,
Pobre Francisco a sorrir e a pregar.
Não quis o ouro nem pedra suntuosa,
Fez-se o Evangelho no chão a florir;
E a doce Clara, em prece silenciosa,
Foi o arrimo que o fez prosseguir.
Quando o sarraceno a muralha avançou,
Clara ergueu o ostensório com fé;
O magnetismo da santa apartou
Todo o ruído que vinha de pé.
E nas areias que o sultão domina,
Foi o diálogo a paz a selar;
É a quinta força, a corrente divina,
Que as duas almas vieram cantar.

Where heavy swords and the iron crusades
Brought bitter tears to the valleys of gray,

And drove the noise from the beautiful land.
And in the sands where the Sultan was ruling,
Peace was established through columns of grace;
It is the Fifth Force, continuously schooling
The twin-bound systems to enter the place.
